Race Start: November 7th 2020 Lake James State Park, Nebo, North Carolina
Race HQ: Lake James State Park (Paddys Creek)

NCARS will be back in action in the Lake James area of North Carolina. This will be a new site for our race this year and look forward to offering another great time in the great outdoors. As with all of our races, we like to offer racers a little bit of everything. This race will be no different: a bushwhacking O-course, single track and some road mountain bike riding, and some scenic paddling. If you have participated in one of our races then you know we like to make it challenging yet suited for every skill level.

Boats: Each team needs to either
1) Provide their own kayak / canoe or
2) Rent through NCARS (see add-on options during registration)
*There will be a limited number of boats for rent — first come, first served.

Required individual gear:
- A functional MOUNTAIN bike; no road or cycle cross bikes
- CPSC marked bicycling helmet on any bike, ropes section and moving water class 3 or greater
- Type I, II, or III PFD while paddling (Blinking Red or White light on 1 person in boat)
- Light stick on PFD if paddling between sunset and sunrise
- Food, drink to last the duration of the race
- A pen/ pencil/ sharpie
- Knife
- Whistle
- Individual headlight with extra batteries
- Bike lights with extra batteries on the bike legs; white front, red rear
- Canoe or Kayak
- UTM plotter with 1:24,000 scale
- Compass
- Watch
- Cell phone
- Basic first aid kit
- Light sticks on stern and bow.(Blinking light while on the boat)
- Appropriate clothing for all weather conditions
- Waterproof map case
- Water purification method
- Spare bike tube, method of tire/tube inflation and bike repair kit
As with all of our races. We like to offer racers a little bit of everything. This race is no different. A bushwhacking O-course, Single track mountain bike trails and paddling. If you have participated in one of our races then you also know we like bike and ride uphill...A lot.
30 to 40 miles
MyTopo maps contain topographic lines, manmade features, and some trails. Other maps of the area can be used during the race. Maps of the Lake James can be found online. The MyTopo maps and those given at check in are all that are needed to run the race. The majority of points will require UTM plotting on a 1:24000 scale.
Michael Beacham is the Race Manager. Many more will be involved in pre-running the course, setting flags, staffing transition areas and organizing HQ on race day. Volunteer registration is also online.
As for all races we hope for good weather but in order to keep this race from just being about surviving reasonable weather is preferred.
This is an event that is being conducted under a Special Use Permit.
